DEVON SWEEP DORSET ASIDE
On a sunny but windswept day at Redlands Sports Ground, Weymouth, Devon Under-15 girls continued their impressive 2008 campaign with a 117-run victory. The visitors were asked to bat first and after a bright start by openers Clara Nielson and Rebecca Bertrand, the loss of both in consecutive overs left Devon on 27-2. Amara Carr and Rebecca Piddock repaired the damage by adding 45 for the third wicket before Piddock perished to a fine catch at backward square. Carr added a further 34 runs with Katie Greenwood or the fifth wicket before a bizarre run out ended her innings when in complete control. She was adjudged run out at the non-striker's end for apparently not grounding her bat. Unusually, Devon continued to lose wickets on a regular basis and it was left to Tessa Dibble and Megan Hamlyn to add 23 for the final wicket to take the score to 156-9.
If nothing else, this Devon team responds well when they put in what might be considered a below par performance with the bat. This they did as Jodie Dibble removed one of the openers with the score on 10 and from there on the innings turned into a procession as wickets tumbled. Rebecca Bertrand picked up 3-6, Rebecca Piddock 3-1 and Clara Nielson 2-12 as Dorset were brushed aside.
