Somerset edge out Devon in thriller

Devon opted to bat first on a hot afternoon at Kings after winning the toss. The innings started brightly enough with Frances Lausen and Vicky Bowden adding 40 before Bowden was trapped lbw. Giselle Ansley's poor run of form with the bat continued as she was out to a terrific catch close in on the off side. Lausen was joined by the reliable Carr and together they advanced the score to 74 before Carr unluckily played on for 13. Lausen then somehow managed to run herself out for a well made 22 and the innngs was stuttering. The only reason Devon managed to get past 100 was thanks in the main to some spirited hitting by Grace Kiff as she made a quickfire 15. Thereafter it was a deck of cards being blown over as the last six wickets fell for just 5 runs in what was probably the worst batting performance in some time by this side, Jodie Dibble left high and dry on 2. The Somerset innings got off to a flier as Sophie Luff smashed 6 boundaries in her quickfire 30 to take the game away from Devon. Rebecca Piddock bowled superbly taking 2 wickets including the dangerous Luff as Devon fought back. She was helped by skipper Giselle Ansley, who also claimed 3 wickets and a super spell from Jodie Dibble as suddenly Somerset found themselves 9 down and still requiring six to win. Unfortunately keeper Carr was unable to get to a wild delivery from Dibble which went for 5 wides and took all the pressure off the Somerset girls. An excellent and spirited bowling and fielding effort from the Devon girls was not enough to repair the damage done by a dreadful batting collapse.
