Gregory Breaks Record with 7-68

Plympton's West of England all-rounder Lewis Gregory broke the Devon under 17 bowling record and possibly achieved the best ever figures in Devon county youth cricket. He nearly bowled his side to an outstanding first innings victory against Berkshire, on a typical perfect track, at Sandford. Bowling uphill and against the wind he left Berkshire 33-2 overnight with the help of two smart catches from keeper Matt Thompson. Next day his captain bowled him from the top end and the extra bounce gave him a caught and bowled and a catch at mid on by Zak Bess. For his final three wickets he merely uprooted the stumps in an outstanding spell of bowling on a track that others were experiencing difficulty in penetrating their opponents batsmen, who were chasing 411, and were on 358-9 at stumps with most of the Devon bowling options, hampered by injuries to Mark Gilmour and Sam Smith, having run out in the final hour.

The Devon youth archives reveal many six wicket hauls but no other seven wicket return. The Youth Association would like to know if these figures have been bettered - contact DCBYouth@aol.com. When Gilmour was injuried on the first day batting, Gregory, who has played for England at under 16s, promised a fivefer he went two better.
