EX-CORNWOOD cricketer Phil Bees raised more than £2,000 for Diabetes Uk by taking part in the Great North Run.
Bees, the Devon League fixture secretary, has become interested in the work of the charity as his granddaughter Paige was diagnosed diabetic last year.
Diabetes has become a part of the family’s life. Paige needs to have her blood sugar levels checked at least five times a day and has four insulin injections daily.
Mum Katie and dad Andrew carefully have to monitor what she eats and when she exercises.
Paige loves swimming, but her parents need to ensure her blood sugar levels are up to make sure they do not dip too far during exercise, which would make her very poorly.
Bees, who played his last game for Cornwood on the final day of the season, said he had a fantastic day as a runner and a fund-raiser.
“I finished in 7774th position out of 41551 who completed the run in 1.52.53,” said Bees.
My sponsorship total has now passed a fantastic £2,300 and I would like to thank everyone who has donated.
“It is still possible to people to donate at www.justgiving.com/Phil-Bees.
“It was a fantastic day, with great support from the local people for the whole of the 13.1 miles.
“It was much warmer than forecast at 21 degrees, whereas it was expected to be 16 to 17 degrees.
“It was 4 minutes from the starting gun before I actual started walking, making progress by 150 metres and then stopping until 10 minutes.
“I went past the start at 23 minutes, so it was good that I got a chip to chip time.
“The overall trip was brilliant with the opening ceremony on the Thursday evening and the City Games on the Saturday.”
