South Dartmoor back to winning ways in cups

SOUTH Dartmoor’s cricketers are on the march again after getting through the first two rounds of national cup competitions.

Teams from the college at Ashburton dominated Devon schools’ cricket last season, winning seven of the nine county age-group competitions.

The Under-12s won their county title and through that they qualified for this season’s Bunbury Cup competition.

And the Under-13 girls got through to the regional play-offs of the Lady Taverner’s indoor competition before losing in the final at Millfield School.

The boys defeated Penair School from Truro by 65 runs at Bovey Tracey to move within one win over the Bunbury Cup quarter-finals.

Skipper Taylor Ingham-Hill batted from start to finish for an unbeaten 43 in South Dartmoor’s 20-over total of 119 for four.

Penair bowled well mid-inings, but South Dartmoor upped the tempo in the last six, adding 56 for the loss of just three wickets.

Alfie Tucker, Sam Harvey and Charlie Clifford-Bourne all made it into double figures.

Penair's reply got off to the worst possible start for them as Charlie Clifford-Bourne ran out their opening batsman with a direct hit from the first ball of the innings.

Wickets fell steadily – three to Clifford-Bourne and two to Ingham-Hill as Penair limped to 54 all out.

The girls – Devon champions this winter – had unbeaten run to the final of their competition.

South Wales (66-6) were beaten by a total of 105-4; Isle of Wight (87-5) lost to a target of 113-4 and Wiltshire were 45 all out chasing 109 to win.

Millfield edged a close final by just four runs.

South Dartmoor kept Millfield to 112, and were on target right the way through.

Needing 11 to win off the last over a win looked possible, but some tight bowling and fielding from Millfield meant South Dartmoor missed out on a place in the national finals by just four runs.
