The Budleigh Salterton ground yesterday
BUDLEIGH Salterton have moved tomorrow’s scheduled 2nd XI game against Cornwood to St Peter’s prep school at nearby Lympstone.
The Ottermouth ground has suffered from waterlogging problems during the recent wet spell and was out of bounds last Saturday when Bradninch 1st XI were due to pay a visit.
More rain this week has left the outfield saturated and it was clear on Thursday the ground would be unfit.
Lloyd White, the new 1st XI captain at Budleigh, said the club has done everything possible to get the ground playable without success.
“Our club is surrounded by a dyke which is connected to the sea front,” said White.
“If this dyke is not emptied when it rains heavily, as it has done, it fills up and the surface water which is at the ground has no where to go and only sit on the surface of the outfield.
“Two years ago we spent £30,000 on new drainage to help improve the situation.
“We have three water hogs at the club and had two volunteers and our groundsman hogging water off the ground for four days straight.
“The dyke cannot be emptied by just anyone - They have to be licensed and
“It takes a huge digger to remove the pebbles and debris that the tide brings in with it.
“The dyke was emptied on Wednesday and Thursday last week.”
League officials have asked Budleigh if there is anything else which could be done to alleviate the problem, or any help they can offer through pitch advisors or the Devon Groundsman’s Association.
White said he would be happy to give anyone a tour of the ground and point out the source of the problems first hand.
Budleigh have been in talks with their landlords, Clinton Estates, about moving to new, drier site.
White said it may be a while before the club is able to move.
“In terms of a new ground, we have a hard-working relocation committee and there is a long-term plan in place, but as you can imagine, these things don't happen overnight,” said White.
