STOKEINTEIGNHEAD cruised to a well-deserved victory on Sunday in the South Devon League Division 2 game at Paignton.

The home side batted first. Openers Ollie Higgs and Tom Blundell did well under the opening Stoke attack of Mark Russell and Pribil Krisnan.

Higgs did most of the early scoring and would continue after Blundell fell to the bowling of Russell. Replacement Noah Wright, brought on a change in the run rate and the score was soon past the century. Krisnan removed Wright for 40 and soon Higgs by Chris Prestt for 56.

Mark  Smith with Joel Ashworth took up the battle taking the score to 174. With their demise, Paignton’s fortune turned, with the next 6 wickets falling for just 21.

Young David Rew, in his first league game for the visitors took apart some of the lower order completing his 5 overs with 3 wickets for only 5 runs. Paignton were all out for 195 before the completion of the allotted overs.

In reply, Stoke openers Paul Russell and Andrew Thornton-Clarke, took the game very much to the home side, Unfortunately, Thornton-Clarke was run out early, with Dan Britcliffe who was obviously in fine form taking on the attack.

The score rose to 48 when Russell was bowled by Charlie Slough for 40. The second wave of bowling from Blundell and Harry Ward would suffer from Dan and replacement Jamie Gray, as the score rocketed along to 142 off just 18 overs.

Jamie was taken off the square for 39, from the bowling of S Knight, the result of a superb catch by Ashworth the home side keeper, who ran full stretch and captured the ball with one gloved hand.

Mark Russell took up the chase with Dan.

The run rate slowed down at this point, but the victory was never in doubt, and the final run was scored off Ward with 12 overs to spare.

Stokeinteignhead having become Division 2 champions will now take their place in Division 1 next season.
