HONITON put an eventful season to bed at their annual awards night out at the Deer Park Hotel.
The 1st XI managed to stay in the D Division despite looking doomed to relegation for much of the season.
There was an early season hiatus when skipper Kevin Kelly had to stand down, but his replacement Adam Holmes steered Honiton to safety.
Holmes finished with 33 wickets, thesecond best in the entire division and only bettered by Dan Haturusingha of promoted champions Clyst Hydon with 50.
Holmes was handed the 1st XI bowler of the year award during the dinner by club president Terry Lindsell.
Kelly – freed from the tripleresponsibility of batting bowling and captaining the side – flourished with bat and ball.
There were 419 runs for eighth in the division averages as well as 24 wickets, which put him tenth on aggregate.
Kelly’s stats easily won him the 1st XI batting cup and also the players’ player of the year award.
Kelly won two more awards: player of the year and performance of the season, which was earned for making a century in the win over Halberton & Sampford Peverell.
The 2nd XI didn’t manage to dodge the drop though and will be down in the D Division East next season,
Honiton 2nd XI were all out for 32 against promoted Exeter 3rd XI, but among the lows of a relegation season there were some highs to.
Corey Lapping won the club’s most-improved player award, creeping into the division’s top-35 bowling averages. One to watch for the future.
Tom Strawbridge was 2nd XI batsman of the year and Richard Hill bowler of the year and players- player for his 17 wickets in a difficult campaign.
The Duckman of the Year – a self-explanatory award – went to Ben Paverley.
It may have been a season of mixed fortunes, but one which was far from disappointing in the eyes of chairperson Kim Slater.
“Many positives can be taken from this season,” said Slater in her welcoming remarks.
“There were a large number of Youth players, for whom 2013 was their first foray into senior cricket.
“They did not disappoint and made Honiton CC proud, what they lacked in experience was made up for by their enthusiasm, and their youthful energy was in plentiful supply.
“The foundations are laid for a promising 2014 season.”
Slater thanked the club’s many sponsors for their support, adding there were too many to mention by name.
The Deer Park Hotel are the new main sponsors and recently supplied several sets of shirts for club members to wear in 2014.
“Their sponsorship means that we can go into 2014 knowing our future is secure, and can concentrate on building success on the field,” said Slater.
