SDL umpire walk-off episode probed

RESULTS & TABLES

SOUTH Devon League officials have asked Exmouth Raleigh and Paignton to submit reports on their abandoned match at Queens Park last Sunday.

Raleigh umpire Bryon Fishlock refused to carry on late in the game after an alleged confrontation with Paignton players.

Fishlock, who is also the chairman of the competition, is saying little ahead of any possible hearing as he wants to tell his story then.

However he did confirm it was the actions of the Paignton players on three separate occasions during the match which convinced him to walk off.

Paignton only had eight players at the start of the match, but as they were batting that didn't cause them a problem.

The trouble started after tea when a Paignton player arrived on the ground and offered to come on as a fielder.

Fishlock consulted with his Paignton colleague and both agreed it was too late in the game to introduce a player who was not on the original team sheet.

There was a second flashpoint when Paignton appealed for an Exmouth batsman to be given out caught behind and umpire Fishlock said 'not out'.

When the same player was dismissed soon afterwards there was an alleged confrontation between a group of Paignton players and Fishlock, who at that point walked off.

Fishlock is taking no part in setting up the discipline hearing, which is being organised by league secretary Dave Howe.

Paignton chairman Mark Griffiths said he was aware of the episode, but declined to comment further.

The game was finely balanced at the time with Exmouth closing in on Paignton's whopping total of 306 for five, in which Connor Bryan and Dan North both made centuries during a stand of 186 for the fourth wicket.

Exmouth were 282 for four when the plug was pulled. Finlay Marks was 118 not out at the time having put on 176 with Harvey Sargent (96) for the first wicket.
