Plymouth learn lesson against Bovey

PLYMOUTH’S flying start to the season encountered a hiccough when Bovey Tracey beat them by eight wickets.

Maruns Labuschange had his first failure of the season – he was caught at slip by current county captain Chris Bradley off the bowling of predecessor Neil Hancock – and Plymouth missed the Australian’s contribution.

When the 50 overs ran out Plymouth were 163 for nine with Harry Stephenson top scoring on 45 and opener Callum Whittaker next best on 27.

Pasi Mawalage came in at number nine and made 26.

Pick of the bowlers for Bovey was Hancock with three for 25.

Bovey lost openers Peter Bradley and Damian Bourke to Sam Stein and Mawalage respectively – and at 19 for two Plymouth were in the game.

An unbroken stand of 144 between Andy Fairbairn (51no) and Matt Golding (80no) saw the runs knocked off with more than five overs to bowl.

Tons from Labuschange helped Plymouth beat Bradninch and North Devon in their first two games.

Losing to Bovey was Plymouth’s first setback, but not one skipper Matt Hooper is worrying about too much.

“It didn't go as we would have liked, but we were beaten by an experienced side,” said Hooper.

“We didn't bat well although it was great to see Harry Stephenson and Pasi Mawalage get us to a total that we had a chance of defending.

“Their bowlers made it difficult for us, their attack was well suited to the pitch and they have a lot of experience.

“Bovey batted very well on a pitch that was consistently slow throughout the day.

“Hats off to Golding and Fairbairn; they dug it out, got themselves in and saw it home.

“We threw everything at them but couldn't prise them out. I can't fault our boys for the endeavour and effort they showed.

“I am hoping my young team will learn from this, how to bowl patiently on difficult wickets and how to construct a run chase as Bovey did that well.”

Bovey skipper Bradley said Fairbairn and Golding batted well and had the best of the conditions.”It was a strange decision to bat first by them, as the wicket was damp and it improved,” said Bradley.

“It helped us that we got Labuschange and James Toms for not very many”
