Page and Murrin see it through

DEVON O50s take on Cornwall at Truro tomorrow boosted by a three-wicket win over Somerset at Kilmington.

Somerset finished their innings on 225 for six wickets in their 45 overs – total Devon knocked off with nearly six overs to spare with Neil Murrin and skipper Roger Wensley leading the way.

Minly through David Stephenson Someret got up to 62 before losing their first wicket. Richard Newport well caught at mid-off by Mark Goodman off the bowling of Paul Nott.

A partnership of 49 followed before Richard Gatton was bowled by Graham Munday for 22.

Simon Reeves was bowled by Paul Harding at 114 then Stephenson – a thorn in the side of Devon for many years - confirmed his class with a good 68 before being LBW to Paul Harding.

Former Devon player Bill Buckingham and Everton Griffiths shared a stand of 57 as Somerset upped the tempo in the latter stages.

Harding with two for 26 – ten of which came in his last over – was the meanest of the Devon bowlers.

Devon started cautiously, however, Murrin soon started to increase the run rate.

At drinks, taken after 23 overs, Devon had not lost a wicket and were moving to victory.

Julian Page was first to go on 138, adjudged lbw to Stephenson for a well-struck 44.

Wensley and Murrin put on 42 in good time before Stephenson removed the latter for 93 from 98 balls.

Wensley, following up his good innings against Wiltshire took on the Somerset bowling and with Mark Heather (8) then with Pete Turner (6 no) guided Devon to victory.

Wensley finished unbeaten on 53 from 42 balls.
