A CAREER best 80 from Trevor Anning helped Devon set Wales a stiff target at Usk on the final day of their Minor Counties Championship game.
Devon, 217 for six overnight, were finally dismissed for 348 when Anning was out to the second ball after lunch.
Anning, batting at number nine, passed his previous best of 75 scored way back in 2002 against Wiltshire in his debut game at Salisbury.
Devon, 59 behind on first innings, had to grind out the runs in the morning session in search of a defendable total.
Josh Bess moved on from 67 overnight to 95 and looked good for a century when Nick Davies trapped him lbw.
Rhys Davies had already gone, bowled by Dewi Jones, and when Bess departed Devon were 273 for eight.
Occupation of the crease was all that mattered for the rest of the morning session and Anning did that with skipper Chris Bradley keeping him company for most of it.
Anning made 55 out of a stand of 66 with the skipper that took Devon to 339 for nine.
Jones bowled Anning in the first over after lunch to finish with four for 64 in the inning and nine for 123 in the match.
Wales have to make 260 to win in a minimum of 61 overs – faster scoring rate than either side has achieved in the match so far.
