D Division - First win for Honiton

SHALDON are up to third in the D Division table thanks to a six-wicket win over Filleigh in a low-scoring affair.

Filleigh were bowled out for 128 and only got that many thanks to some lusty blows by tail-ender Gary Henry.

Henry, who used to play for Ipplepen. Came in at 80 for eight and his 29 off 31 balls made the scoreline a little more respectable.

Seamus McKenna (3-18), Carl Woolnough (2-26) and Mark Couch (2-10) kept Filleigh’s run rate down.

McKenna got Shaldon off to a flier with 40 off 30 balls before he was caught on the boundary in a running total of 76 for one in nine overs.

Karl Blackburn went first ball, but Todd Ballman (37) not out saw it though despite losing Jamie Day for a duck along the way.

Honiton are the visitors to the Hazeldown Oval this Saturday.

ASHBURTON take on lowly Feniton at Varwell Field looking to kick-start their season again after a disappointing run of results.

The losing sequence is now three games following a five-wicket reversal at Uplyme, whose target was reduced to 207 in 37 overs following a break for rain.

Skipper Chris Pascoe made 112 – he and Kevin Nicholls (56) hoisted 56 for the second wicket – in an Ashburton total of 245 for five.

Pick of the bowlers was Ben Whittington (3-58) – and the same player was among the runs with 56 not out as Uplyme went chasing.

Jed Whittington (53) and Adam Caddy both contributed to Uplyme winning with three overs to spare.

Daman Singh (3-36) took the bowling honours for Ashburton, who have dropped down to fifth in the table.

SEATON stay second in the D Division after a three wicket success at Feniton.

Joe Berry (3-41), Alex Hunt (2-31) and Mike Wheeler (2-34) combined to bowl the Acland Park side out for 153.

Once again skipper Graham Tucker provided his side with their top individual offering as he scored 49 in what were difficult batting conditions as his side battled to an al out total of 153. Jon Pyle chipped in with 28.

With seven wickets down and just 97 on the board the run chase looked in troubled waters.

However, Phil Collins joined Alex Hunt at the wicket and the pair first steadied the reply and then saw their side home. Hunt finished one run shy of a half century whilst Collins was unbeaten on 24.

Seaton skipper Ben Morgan said: “Once again we dropped catches. In all it was six this week, one more than seven days before.

“That’s too many and, whilst I’ll accept some of them would have been stunning takes, we have now put down at least five soft catches in the past two games and that’s simply not good enough.

“It’s still a case that we are getting over then line in matches because two or three are delivering.

The day we all fire together we will turn someone over good and proper!”

Morgan continued: “To be sitting second with one to go before the halfway point of the season is very much a case of a job well done, so far.

“However, these dropped catches and the fact that many of us could produce more I think the half-term report would read like this; ‘good work in progress but all players need to sharpen up acts.”

Feniton skipper Tucker said: “There was nothing wrong with our general play.

“All that was missing was that oh so important ingredient of lady luck which tends not to go for you when you are at the lower end of the table!

“We also suffered with a horrible tail end collapse. Having got to 138-5 with still ten overs left a 200 plus score was in target.

“Then we lost our last four wickets for as many runs and a total of 153 were not enough to defend. That said the bowlers were magnificent and took us mighty close.”

HONITON produced the performance of the day to defeat Halberton and Sampford Peverell by 71 runs, claim 19 points, and finish match day eight of the 18-week season out of the bottom two in the D Division.

The two stand-out individual performances in the victory came fro the two people who had skippered the side this season.

Kev Kelly, who was captain on day one of the term, stroked a wonderful century and Adam Holmes, who took over prior a week again and tasted success in this maiden match as skipper, claimed four wickets and also chipped in with a cameo knock of 21.

Batting first Honiton were bowled out for 198 led there by that splendid Kelly ton. Holmes then took 4-18 and Phil Tansley bagged a brace as the Mid Devon men were bowled out for 127.

The victory lifted Honiton out of the bottom two and up to fourth from bottom.

Looking up they are now just 26 points off third placed Shaldon!
