Corns outgunned by Exmouth

CORNWOOD got into the second half of the season still in the Premier Division bottom two after going down by four wickets at Exmouth.

The Corns made 182 all out in the 48th of their 50 overs – tail-ender Matt Butterworth helping things along with 31 after they had collapsed to 120 for seven with 12 overs to go.

Exmouth didn’t have it all their own way on the chase – openers Sandy Allen and Andy Buzza both fell cheaply – and getting Devon batsman David Lye for 29 was a bonus.

But an undefeated 50 from Gary Chappell took Exmouth the rest of the way there, with some help from Trevor Anning (35), Richard Baggs (33) and Lawrence Greenway.

The good news for Cornwood was that fellow strugglers Bradninch lost as well and are only two points ahead. They are the side the Corns have to get ahead of.

The bad news was that Budleigh Salterton finally won a match at the ninth attempt, and closed the gap on Cornwood to 11 points.

The two sides meet this Saturday at Oak Park when Cornwood will be keen to repeat their win over Budleigh on the first day of the season.

Cornwood had to work for their runs with Asif Raza (36) the only batter to get on top of the bowling until he teamed up with new skipper Jason Hall (28).

Anning and Gary Chappell (2-25) both kept the Cornwood batters under lock and key, although there were runs to be had off Lye (10-0-49-1).

Raza went at 89 for four, followed by Hall at 113 for five them Ben Warren and Elliot Staddon in quick succession.

Total collapse was staved off by Butterworth and Matt Skeemer, who put on 50 for the eighth wicket.

Butterworth, whose 31 came off 32 balls, was finally bowled by Anning (3-25). Skeemer was last man out for 28.

Raza nipped out Exmouth opener Allen then Adam Goodliffe claimed Buzza as the home side dipped to 11 for two.

Bees and Butterworth kept it tidy, but Chappell dug in and in stands of 57 with Anning and 32 with Greenway ended the game as a contest.
