KINGSKERSWELL have made it to the halfway point of the season with a 100 per cent record – played 9 won 9.
However their latest victory over one of the bottom clubs Buckland Monochorum was not as straight forward as the six-wicket margin seems to suggest.
Firstly Kerswell travelled with a rather depleted side, missing five regular players including leading run scorer Steve Waters, opening bowler Phil Lacey, and their most economical bowler Paul Harding.
After an explosive start with Paul Edwards (25) hitting anything vaguely in his half, and after the customary early run out, the game seemed to be heading toward an early finish when Buckland found themselves 33 for 3 after only 4 overs!
It seemed things would have to calm down but they didn’t. The flashing blades continued undaunted by the fall of wickets and the Buckland innings finished after only 28 overs with a score of 124 all out. P Daymond was the man that held things together with a very aggressive 60.
For Kerswell the most effective bowlers were Steve Lacey with 4 for 37 who made a mess of the Buckland top order and then Erik Gregersen who at one point bowled the best part of 3 overs and taking none for 14, but after 2 more overs managed to improve his figures to 4 for 14 to polish things off.
Even with a weakened line up the low score Buckland posted on what was a pretty good batting surface was unlikely to cause any undue problems for Kerswell who completed a relatively straight forward victory with first time performer this season Kenny Gormley making 42 and also in his first batting performance of the year Mat Stephens chipping in with 37.
The 20 points secured maintains Kerswell’s lead at 36 points with 9 games to play.
Chardstock claimed a fifth successive F Division victory with a five wicket win at Woodbury.
Skipper Rob Hutchings and Rob Pyman both took two wickets as the Woods were bowled out for 118.
However, the opening salvo from the Chardstock bowlers was down to the impressive pairing of Jack Larcombe and young James Pyman.
Chardstock were then led to victory by Gavin Churchill’s knock of 40.
Skipper Rob Hutchings who has three centuries and a 99 not out in his last four innings opted to let others bat this week.
Churchill top scored and there was a tidy contribution of 22 not out from Paul Reynolds to see the side to victory.
Hutchings said: “The bowlers really did bowl well on what was a very good Woodbury wicket. I could not have asked form more from any of then bowlers and then decided to let the other chaps bat us to victory, which they did very well too!”
Chardstock sit sixth in the table at the halfway stage of the campaign.
They are just 18-points behind second placed Cullompton.
On Saturday Hutchings and his men host fourth placed Chelston who they will overhaul with a big win.
Hutchings says: “A sixth win and we will really be gathering some momentum. There’s plenty of cricket left in the season for us to make this an exceptional season.”
