Exeter get home by five wickets

PLYMOUTH crashed to 89 all out against visiting Exeter and despite a battling fightback in the field lost by five wickets.

Callum Whittaker and James Toms, who impressed for Devon against Wales on their debuts last week, were brought down to earth with a bang as Plymouth slumped to 23 for five in the first 11 overs.

Toms made five, Whitaker one and there wasn’t much in the way of runs from Marcus Labuschange (6), Jake Luffman (1) and Harry Stephenson (1) as Billy Searle (3-10) and Matt Hicks (2-17) ripped into Plymouth.

When Rob Bennett was bowled by Adam Gribble (2-10), Plymouth were 30 for six. Not good.

Ben Stein (35) and Pasi Mawalage (21) put on 53 for the seventh wicket, but when the later also fell to Gribble it was downhill in a hurry to 89 all out.

Plymouth weren’t found wanting in the field as they had Exeter rocking at 16 for three and 36 for five – Sam Stein picking up three for 19 along the way.

Skipper Matt Hooper went on the attack by setting aggressive fields, but nothing woujld shift former Northants Academy scholar Matt Hicks (39no) who took Exeter over the line with Cameron Evans (12no).

Plymouth stay fifth in the Premier table, but are now 22 points behind Exeter in fourth.

It was only Plymouth’s second defeat in the last six matches and not one Hooper will be agonising over.

“The pitch did a bit and a few of our boys got some good balls,” said Hooper

“The way Ben Stein batted was excellent - he showed us that you could play on the pitch and applied himself really well.

“He left the ball brilliantly and attacked at the right times.

“We dropped two catches in one over with Exeter five wickets down for 40, so it could have been a lot different.

“We had five slips for Rob Bennett but only a few guys are used to standing in there.

“Sam Stein also bowled brilliantly, himself and Rob gave us chance. On another day with those two catches taken we might have won.

“It was a strange match but we move on to next week, knowing we are still a good side.”
