Devon O50s through to KO stages

DEVON O50s are though to the knockout stages of the Spitfire Championship after routing Cornwall by 107 runs – and they haven’t finished their group games yet!

The O50s are due to play the Channel Islands at Brixham on Wednesday (1pm), but with five wins on the spin Devon are bound to qualify.

Skipper Roger Wensley opted to bat first against Cornwall at Truro – and must have wished he had fielded after the fall of three early wickets including himself.

Mark Heather and Harold Stevenson consolidated for a few overs before Heather was bowled.

Stevenson followed caught at slip, then Graham Munday and Nigel Mountford both came and went as Devon looked in a sorry state.

A seventh-wicket partnership between Paul Harding and Graeme Wilson settled the nerves of Devon and together they put on over 50.

Harding was run out by a direct hit for 18, but Wilson (47) batted on with Paul Nott (20no)took the score to 190 for nine.

Cornwall’s reply was in tatters three balls into the first over.

Trevor Fell went second ball, and Nigel Sanders the one after, both caught behind off Nott.

Graeme Wilson played his part in a man-of-the-match performance by taking three for 29 as Cornwall were dismissed for 89 in the 33rd over.

Nott took three for 20 and Paul Harding 2-5 off eight overs.
