BOVEY Tracey skipper Peter Bradley knows Exeter won’t be the push over they were on the first day of the season second time around.
Exeter’s first game back in the Premier Division after two seasons away ended early in a 113-run defeat at Bovey.
The teams meet again tomorrow when Exeter go into the meeting as the form side of the division with five wins on the trot in the bank.
Said Bradley: “Exeter have picked up a couple of players since we last saw them – Hicks and Curtis – and now have Rob Holman available most weeks.
“Not only have they strengthened but they have also got acclimatised to Premier Division cricket again.
“It is nice to see a side going into a game with two young bowlers, Billy Searle and Ben Green, and you get the feeling they are trying to it the right way at Exeter.
“It will be a tough game – tougher than last time – but as the league leaders we have to back ourselves to win it.”
Bovey are unchanged for the third game in succession.
TORQUAY skipper Ben Passenger is clear on his side’s targets for the second half of the season, which starts on Saturday with an away game against Sidmouth.
Last Saturday’s 63-run defeat by North Devon left Torquay 17 points clear of the drop zone, which isn’t much of a cushion with 180 points to play for – plus another 18 in declaration bonuses.
Passenger accepts Torquay are in a scrap, but the last thing he intends to do is panic about it.
Torquay aren’t playing dreadfully and if they can raise performance levels a notch here and there Passenger believes they will be fine.
“There are the top five teams – Bovey, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Exeter and Plymouth – and there are the rest including us,” said Passenger.
“It would be nice to beat one of the top sides of course, but if we can’t we have to keep picking up seven, eight or nine points every time.
“The games against the teams around us are the ones we have to win if we want to stay up – and I am confident we can.
“Over the past few games – Bradninch and North Devon, even though we lost – things are starting to click.
“If we can maintain that I am sure we will be fine.”
Torquay welcome back opener Des Kruger against Sidmouth, who was missed when North Devon came calling.
Passenger also hopes to see Somerset staffer Max Waller again, commitments at Taunton permitting.
“The way he throws himself about in the field and just his general approach to the game rubs off on everyone around him,” said Passenger.
Sidmouth welcome back all-rounder Nick Gingell, who went into semi-retirement at the start of the season to play more golf.
Having lost three of their last four games, the defending champions are delighted to have him back.
“Nick has been a big part of what we have achieved over the past few years,” said Sidmouth skipper Will Murray.
“He scores useful runs down the order and bowls useful overs when needed and it is nice to have him back.”
