Plymstock to host first Kwik Cricket Festival

THE first Plymouth Kwik Cricket Festival will be taking place at Plymstock next Sunday (July 14).

Plymstock like a number of clubs in the area, are finding they have youngsters turning up to learn the game and no competitions to play them in.

Typically, competitive cricket starts at U11, which means little for the younger ones.

Paul Birleson from the Plymstock youth section said it was in everyone’s interests to get the lads playing, hence the idea of a festival.

‘We have a growing number of six-to-nine year olds coming to training each week but they are too young for any of the leagues,’ said Birleson.

‘After speaking to other clubs in Plymouth we found we have a common cause, so we have started this festival.’

Teams from Cornwood, Ivybridge, Plympton, Plymstock and Yealmpton are competing.

The plan is for regular events and Ivybridge have agreed to host the next one in August.

The competition will be called the Pilgrim Cup and the emphasis of the day will be fun for all the family.

If you get down to Dean Cross on Sunday, expect to find a bouncy castle, a creation station and something arty for the younger members of the family.’
