PLYMOUTH skipper Matt Hooper said his side contributed to their own downfall at North Devon, where they slipped to a five-wicket defeat.
Zimbabwean Glenn Querl has reappeared at Instow for the second half of the season as Hampshire no longer have a role for him – and he was the difference between the two sides.
Querl took three Plymouth wickets for 27 runs at the city side were held to 192 for nine on 50 overs.
Plymouth were then on the end of an unbeaten 94 from Querl as they recovered from a nervous 85 for five to win with more than seven overs to spare.
Said Hooper: “It was a disappointing defeat and a hard one to take as I felt we had chances to win the game.
“North Devon bowled well but I felt a lot of our batters got starts and then unusually didn't take it on.
“We felt we had a few big decisions go against us and we didn't take some half chances which both affected the outcome of the game.
“We dropped Querl the over after we got Tom Allin out so that would have made it very interesting.”
North Devon skipper Matt Dart saw I differently.
“We really showed some fight as at 85 for 5 we could easily have collapsed,” said Dart.
“That's the difference between a side with confidence or not.
“We are getting better each week. Lets hope it carries on.
“It is still very tight down the bottom. One loss and you are back in the cart so no let ups now.”
James Toms made 36 at the top of the order for Plymouth, but run machine Marnus Labuschange only lasted five balls and there were modest scores from Jake Luffman (14) and Ben Stein (19) as Plymouth dipped to 94 for five under pressure from Matt Westaway (2-30) and Matt Dart (2-36).
George Stephenson (41) and Rob Bennett (19) held the middle order together with Bennett the last man out after Querl had returned to break the stand.
North Devon lost Barney Huxtable and Rob Gear to Plymouth’s fit-again pacemen Dave Burke (4-61), then Allin, Jas Kalsi and Max Curtis as they meandered to 85 for five.
North Devon keeper Rob Ayre is a handy chap to have coming in at seven as he has Premier Division tons to his name – and his 33 not out at the other end from Querl took the game away from Plymouth.
Although they lost, Hooper said there were plus points too.
“It was great to see George Stephenson back to his best,” said Hooper.
“He gives the middle order some power and I know he will get a big score soon.
“On the bowling front it was brilliant to have Burkey back. He bowled really well as did Sam Stein. Both looked continually threatening to some good batsman.”
