C DIVISION

CLYST Hydon’s game at Ivybridge proved to be a real non-event after the home side were skittled out for 39.

Skipper Kev Sercombe (5-15) and Dhanuja Haturusingha (5-17) took Ivybridge apart, then Clint Lewis top scored with 17 in an abbreviated run chase.

Clyst Hydon (223pts) have their sights fixed on second place behind champs-elect Lewdown, but need to stay ahead of Hatherleigh (201) to stay there.

Sercombe is quietly confident they will.

“Our next two games are Stoke Gabriel and Kingsbridge, before Lewdown on the last day,” said Sercombe. “Win those two and I can’t see how Hatherleigh can catch us?”

At the other end of the table Seaton have it all to do to stay up after they went down by two wickets to hit-or-miss Stoke Gabriel.

Mark Bray (43), Richard Maudsley (36) and Chris Clode (27) all contributed to a Seaton total of 175.

Dave Bolland (4-26) finished Seaton off after Simon Phillips (3-40) and Andy Lockyer (3-38) softened them up.

Skipper Ben Morgan then claimed 4-55 and Ben Libby gave great support with 3-41 but the pair were unable to stop Stoke Gabriel winning.

Lockyer (30) and Phillips (22) made early runs then Billy Allcock (39) saw Stoke through.

With three to play Seaton sit second from bottom, 16 points from safety. Ashburton the target side to catch, visit Court Lane on the last day of the season.

Cockington’s fate was finally sealed when they were eight-wicket losers against visiting Bideford.

Steve Evans (23) had the only score that mattered as Matt Bettis (4-30) shot Cockington out for 52. Matt Allin (27no) led Bideford home.

Ashburton made Hatherleigh work every inch of the way for a two-wicket win at Varwell Field.

Skipper Chris Pascoe went at six for one and came out at 150 for six having made a top score of 94. Ashley Harvey was next best on 18.

Rob Fishleigh led the bowling effort (3-43), aided and abetted by Nick Rogers (2-30) and Simon Gillespie (2-34).

Harvey (3-40) and Dean Topping (3-22) kept the Hatherleigh batters honest and it needed a stand of 60 between Gareth Tidball (32) and Gillespie (87) to clinch victory.

Kingsbridge got closer than anyone has to beating leaders Lewdown this season – only to have victory snatched away!

Neil Peach (3-43) picked off dangerman Rob Mutch – he is up at Lancashire this week for trials – as Lewdown dipped to 72 for four.

Only Anthoni (corr) Weeks hung around long as Bhanu deSilva (4-29) and Peach left Lewdown struggling at 82 for eight.
