D DIVISION - WEEK 16
OTTERY St Mary completed the double over D Division champions Ipplepen and now need 27 points from their final two games to join the Pens in the C Division next season.
Ipplepen were bowled out in 29.3 overs for a meagre 76. Tom Dyer top scored with 15 and there were 21 extras in the visiting total as Will Harrison (5-34) and Rob Johns (4-17) worked their way through the line-up.
Kiwi Andy Mason (3-24) then picked up the three Otters wickets that fell in the successful run chase that used up just 18.1 overs with Will Mumford (28) and Rob Crabb (27) the two not out batsmen when the winning line was crossed.
Feniton went into their game with doomed Bridestowe knowing they needed maximum points in their last three games - and Ottery to slip up - if they were to pinch the second promotion place in the D Division.
Norman Bedford claimed 4-32 in ten overs and there were two wickets each for Russ Witton, John Pyle and John French as the visitors were bowled out for 104.
Feniton skipper Mark Kingdom then fell for a first ball duck but that was the end of and wicket taking for the basement dwellers as Martin Swannell (48no) and Bedford (50no) saw the Acland Park men to a nine-wicket win.
A defiant Kingdon said: “We can only win our games then hope for an Ottery slip.
It does seem a long-shot, especially after they defeated Ipplepen, but we have to keep believing and need to approach the last two as must-win games.”
Yelverton’s outside hope of gate crashing the D Division promotion party ended as they went down by 44 runs in a low scoring affair at home to Plymouth CS&R.
Brian Gaylard top scored with 43 as the visitors closed on 147-7. Kev Swiggs (3-29) and Ian Cunningham (3-38) picked up wickets for Yelverton, who were then bowled out for 103.
Only Rob Bennett made any impression with 41 as Dave Bayliss and Dan Windsor picked up three wickets each.
Victory ends any remaining worries that the visitors may have had about being sucked into the relegation scrap.
There was no play possible at a soggy Countess Wear where relegation-threatened Halberton were hoping to play to bank points in their bid to beat the drop.
The mid-Devon men are still four points from safety with this Saturday’s home meeting against Bridestowe looking a key game in their survival bid.
No play either at Whimple and that did neither the hoists, nor scheduled visitors Whitchurch any favours in their respective bids to beat the drop.
