E Division: Wickets tumble at Honiton

E DIVISION

THERE was an extraordinary game at Honiton where 19 wickets fell for a combined total of 101 runs!

Leaders Filleigh arrived at Mountbatten Park having lost just twice this season but they were skittled out for a meagre 48 with Phil Tansley claiming eight wickets for six runs!

That though, was not the end of the story for Honiton proceeded to lose all but one of their wickets in the run chase, sealing a single wicket win on 51-9 with George Meadows’ offering of 12 the highest individual score of any of the 22 players involved in the game!

Upottery began the day in second spot but they hit weather problems at Uplyme and Lyme Regis and ended the day sitting fourth and 11 points off the promotion places.

Upottery batted first and had proceeded to 63-3 from 17 overs when the rains arrived.

Clearly hoping to get back out and see if they could push their score up over a further five or ten overs, the visitors were dismayed to learn that, when then resumption came after a near three hour wait, their time was up and so the home side were left with 29 overs to score 64 to win, something they did for the loss of just for wickets.

Uplyme banked 15 points to Upottery’s two and all that means that Ashley Caddy’s side are now one of four teams separated by just 11 points tucked in behind leaders Filleigh in what looks to be one of the closest run-ins to the season’s end of any of the Francis Clark Devon League Divisions.

Kentisbeare moved up to joint second, denied the second promotion berth by virtue of having won one game fewer than Honiton, after they were nine-run winners in a thriller at home to Babbacombe.

Andrew Chave certainly enjoys playing against the South Devon side as he followed up his 7-34 in the first meeting this term with 5-66 to bowl the visitors out for 148 after he had hit 22 in the Kents’ offering of 157.

Harry Howe (29) and Chris Gillett (28) were the other Kents batsmen to get runs as Paul Bates took 4-37 for the visitors. Tin Goodwin (33) and Steve Porter (36) led the run chase but with Chave’s fivefer and 3-32 from Pat Hobson, the Mid Devon side claimed a thrilling victory to maintain their promotion bid.

Tiverton eased their D Division relegation worries with a 99-run win at Woodbury.

Ben Scofield (48) and Richard Pugsley (24) led the Mid Devon side to 172-9. Kevin Miller claimed a fivefer, finishing with 5-13 for Woodbury who were then bowled out for just 73 with only Jimmy Jones (23) making much of an impression with the bat.

Russell Hilton claimed 4-25 for the mid-Devon side.

Kenn were in all sorts of bother at 60-8 at Kilmington when Pete Chisleyt (22) and teenager Casey Clay (44) added 80 for the ninth wicket, which allowed Kenn to close on a respectable 140.

Ben Noble (4-23) and skipper Maurice Beviss (4-27) claimed the first eight wickets to fall and it was only when they left then attack that the Kenn fight back was able to begin.

Hal Cook claimed the other two wickets to fall for the hosts who closed out a six-wicket win in comfort.

Dave Cooper hit 40 and Tom Gooding an unbeaten 34 whilst Win Wilmott chipped in with 17.

Skipper Beviss said: “We bowled very well and also held our catches. Then all-round support fielding was very good, that said I do feel we should have got them out for a lot less than the 140 given they were 60-8 but it ended up a highly satisfying all-round effort by the side.”
