IT’S advantage Topsham St James in the F Division promotion race after they thumped visiting Cullompton by 146 runs to gain another maximum- points haul whilst title rivals Shaldon had to settle for 14 points in a winning draw at Kingskerswell.
The result of those two games means the Saints have a seven-point lead with both teams having three games to play.
Alex Sparkes (67), Nick Horne (60), Tom Richardson (52, Joe Thomlinson (40no) and Johnnie Horne (31no) all chipped in as the Saints posted a commanding 301-3 against Cully for whom colt Darren Paul claimed 2-38.
Paul then hit 23 as did another of the Landspeed Meadow colts, Max Bristow whilst Tom Hardy top scored with 25 but wickets fell at regular intervals, the final one on 155. Thomlinson completed a fine all-round effort with splendid figures of 3-3 and both Naik and skipper Treleaven bagged braces for the table toppers who know now that 54 points from their final home game of the season next weekend against Exeter Civil Service and then away trips to Chelston and Culmstock, and they will be promoted as champions.
Shaldon lost some ground in the race for the F Division title when they could not knock over either of the last pair at Kingskerswell where the home side closed on 184-9 in reply to the Shaldon offering of 187-9. Todd Ballman hit 46 and Andrew Espley an unbeaten 37whilst Eric Greggersen claimed 4-46 for the hosts.
Openers Mark Bryant (59) and John Elliott (45) took the score to 113 before they were parted and that was the signal for an almighty collapse.
Kerswell’s last pair, who needed seven off the final over and four off the last ball to win, stood firm to claim the losing draw.
Yarcombe are not out of the promotion race, indeed they have the chance to rein in Shaldon in a fortnight’s time when they entertain the South Devon side.
They claimed a ninth win of the F Division season without bowling a ball in anger as scheduled opponents Hemyock cried off the night before unable to raise a side for the game.
Cheriton Fitzpaine were able to celebrate their first win since May at the village’s Ring’O’Bells pub after they overcame visiting Newton St Cyres by six wickets. Simon Bates (50) and Dave Church (38) were the principle run scorers for the visitors in a total of 184-7 as Ben Coe took 3-15 including a hat-trick.
In landing his treble Coe became the first Cherries bowler to achieve the feat since 1998. Mike Foan (68) and Jeremy Tricks (63no) then made sure of a six-wicket win, the reply closing on 188-4.
John Tallamy hit 44 to lead Chelston to a nine-wicket win at Culmstock, where they bundled the Mid Devon side out for 81 with Shaun Molineux taking 6-33.
Ollie Rowe top scored for Culmstock with 35 and the single wicket taker for the hosts was 15-year-old Adam Howe, helped by a smart Spencer Popham catch at slip.
