TOPSHAM St James travelled to Culmstock on the final day of the season knowing that a haul of 17 points or more would see them make the return journey
as champions.
The Tops certainly served up a champion performance, powering their way to a declaration at 234-7 and then bundling the hosts out for 56 inside 17 overs.
Tom Richardson (78), Joe Thomlinson (43) and John Richardson (36) combined to send the Bonfire Field side to their declaration.
John Pyle clamed 4-57 for the hoists who then had only Spencer Popham put up much resistance with the bat, scoring 16 out of the humble team offering of 56. Saints skipper Ross Treleaven led from the front with 3-17 and there were two-wicket hauls for both Adrian Miller (2-8) and Dan Williams (2-17).
Cullompton skipper Craig Hawkins saved the best for last, hitting his highest score of the season, 70, but it was in a losing cause as he bowed out as the Landspeed Meadow Club’s skipper with his team beaten by 23 runs in a well-contested game with Exeter Civil Service.
Vic Murphy hit an unbeaten 121 for the Civil Servants, leading them to an impressive 255-3. Malcolm Paiva snared two of the three wickets.
Hawkins then hit 70 and mark Ashplant struck 34 as Kris Calderhead claimed 3-75, Cully finally all out for 232.
Outgoing skipper Hawkins said: “It’s been a good run, I have had two years but now it’s time for someone else to have a go at it.
“Skippering a side is a tough task but I’d like to thank the players, and committee, at the club for the support they have given me.
“I have enjoyed immensely my time as skipper but would like to concentrate now on my own game and happily play under somebody else.”
