WEEK 21 of the Farm and Cottage Holidays, North Devon Cricket League, saw the spotlight taken by a couple of mid-Devon teams.

Halberton secured the Division Three title despite losing by four wickets at home to Sandford II whilst Cheriton Fitzpaine, playing their penultimate Division Five fixture of the season, won for the first time!

DIVISION ONE

The only Division One game scheduled, at Filleigh, where Heathcoat were due to visit, fell to the weather. That was a disappointing way for Filleigh to complete their fixtures and it was also their fifth time they have suffered a weather driven cancellation this season – more than any other top flight side.

Not playing, also ended any hopes of Heathcoat avoiding a bottom place finish and so last season’s Champions, who have lost as few games as the current table toppers Bideford but who sit bottom owing to having had a bundle of points deducted for playing unregistered players, are destined to play back in Division Two next season.

DIVISION TWO

Both the Division Two games were not played, one weather hit and one owing to team being unable to raise an eleven. For the sixth time this season, that more than any other team throughout the league, Lynton and Lynmouth suffered a rain cancellation with no play possible for their home game with Weare Giffard. Morebath were once again unable to raise a side for their scheduled trip to Victoria Park and that ‘win’ for Park secures their second tier place for another season whilst Morebath are heading for a second successive relegation.

DIVISION THREE

Halberton clinched the Division Three title despite going down by four wickets at home to Sandford II.

Adrian Hills hit an unbeaten 72 to lead Halberton to 182-6. Sean Cockram (3-25) and Simon Ashplant (2-33) were the main wicket takers for the visitors who got home on 185-6, led there by Sean Hawkins (33) and Simon Ashplant (32no). Max Ansell was the most successful Halberton bowler with 2-32. Halberton’s Richard Durrant said: “We can’t wait to try our luck in Division Two. It’s great to think that we could be locking horns with the likes of Heathcoat next season. To welcome them to our Samford Peverell home would be a great honour.”

North Devon II were comfortable winners against nine man Bude. Batting first it was a Dan Bowser century (101) and a knock of 74 from Damn Pickard that took the Instow side to 286-8. Richard Clark shipped in with 45. Bude were then bundled out for 111 with only Ben Purcell making much of an impression with 26. The wicket taking duties were shared around, the best of the figures being 2-26 from five overs by Fergus O’Donnell.

DIVISION FOUR

Westleigh’s Division Four promotion dreams were ended when they lost to North Devon by eight wickets

DIVISION FIVE

In Division Five there was a first win, at the thirteenth time of trying, for Cheriton Fitzpaine who defeated Ilfracombe by 42 runs. The Cherries skipper Ben Coe struck an unbeaten 112 to lead the Mid Devon men to 257-4. Callum McKenchie chipped in with 51 and Jim Cutler contributed 42. Mark Cavanagh took 2-68 for ten man Ilfracombe who were then bowled out for 215. Jamie Woodger top scored with 57 and Jamie Sutton hit an unbeaten 44 whilst Andy Hartley took 3-29 with his off-spin and Will Carr picked up 3-58.

Barnstaple and Pilton III were two wicket winners at Heathcoat II where they won with 138-8 in response to the Knightshayes side’s 136 all out. Will Brown (43) and Chris Salter (25) were the principle run scorers for the hosts. Salter then claimed four wickets in a losing cause as Barum claimed a sixth success of the season.

Bratton Fleming II were 43 run winners at home to Nomansland. Batting first, Mark Tucker (54) was the principle provider of runs for the hosts with James Hope taking 3-5 for the visitors. Matt Weeks then top scored with 27 as the reply floundered on 89. James Thomas took 4-11 and there was a fine spell from 16-year-old Mitchell Bryan who finished with figures of 3-20.
