PREMIER 2nd XI
EXETER’S will have to be content with runners-up spot in the Premier 2nd XI after losing by 53 runs to Paignton.
Paignton were fighting for survival and it showed as they made 213 all out.
Despite a battling 49 from Will Hanson, Exeter were bowled out for 160.
The title will be going to Plymouth, who did enough in a drawn game at Sidmouth to ensure they could not be caught.
Rob Button (85) and Tom Hughes (62) scored the bulk of Plymouth’s runs with a stand of 105 for the sixth wicket in a total of 242 for nine.
There were two wickets each for Alistair Chilcott and Fionn Wardrop.
Button (4-37) and James Nicholls (3-23) had Sidmouth rocking at 161 for nine when the overs ran out.
Matt Hewer made 31 and Charlie Miles 30. Mark Jasper and Nick Mansfield blocked out the last over for the draw.
Cornwood juggled their selections round to strengthen the 2nd XI in an attempt to stave of relegation – and the ploy was rewarded with a two-wicket win over North Devon.
North Devon – 88 for six at one stage – reached 131 all out as Matt Dart (21) and Tom Tom Ansell (35) put on 40 at the end.
Henry Bennett (5-37) helped dismiss North Devon, then assisted Dave Tall (50no) in chalking off the runs with a handy 20.
It wasn’t a stroll for Cornwood though as Billy Curtis (2-29), Dart (2-23) and Sam Witheridge (2-21) kept chipping away at the order.
Cornwood need six points off Hatherleigh this Saturday to be sure of dodging the drop.
Hatherleigh were rained off against Plympton – an outcome which did neither side any favours as they are stacked second and third from bottom.
Also off were Budleigh Salterton whose game against Bovey Tracey met a watery end.
Budleigh have now lost four games to waterlogged pitches this year – more than any others side. They are 14 points adrift at the bottom and if they do go down will probably be able to blame the weather.
