Marais clubs double ton off 92 balls

Record breakers - Harry Geering and Marco Marais

MARCO Marais and Harry Geering tore up the B Division record book and wrote a new one of their own in the 185-run demolition job on Alphington,.

Crash! South African Marais cracked an unbeaten 200 off 92 balls containing 254 fours and 16 sixes. The previous high for the division was Dom Wood’s 176 not out for Plymstock against Clyst SG in 2010.

Bang! Marais and skipper Geering, who made 109 not out from 75 deliveries, put on 297 for the third wicket. The old divisional best was 270 put on by Shobrooke pair Jon James and Andrew Codling against Kingsbridge in 2009.

Wallop! Lewdown’s team total of 363 for two beatthe previous nest of 339 for three set by Plymstock against Kingsbridge in 2009.

Lewdown lost wickets at 34 and 66 to bring Geering and Marais together. Alphington never looked like parting them.

Alphington’s Mike Shepherd’s five overs for 73 must have hurt - and Lee Rowe got it at the end when Marais had his double ton in sight.

Rowe, who had bowled five overs for 53 runs, had to bowl the last one to Marais, who needed 34 to reach 200.

“He hit the first four balls for six and the fifth for four, which left six needed off the last ball,” said Geering.

“The bowler floated one up trying to tempt Marco – and he hit that one for six as well!”

Marais has already hit five hundreds and two 50s this season on his way to 989 league runs at an average of 141.28.

One more ton will put Marais level with record holder Andy Pugh, who had six of them for Brixham in the 1991 season. He averaged 77.17.

Alphington were bowled out for 188 in reply, to the clear annoyance of skipper Stuart Shaw.

“I was disappointed to get bowled out on that wicket – it was a road,” said Shaw.

“There could be no excuses. Just bad shot selection, silly run outs and a general lack of discipline.”

On Marais he said: “It was faultless innings from an outstanding batsman.

“I would say for sure he won’t be there next season – he is bound to go on to bigger and better things.”

Shepherd top scored with 87 for Alphington and Dave Haysom made 24.
