Exmouth take share of top spot

BRADNINCH inched closer to the drop zone in the Premier Division when Exmouth beat them by 33 runs.

Devon pair Seb Benton and Trevor Anning both hit half-centuries as Exmouth made 259 for six in their 50 overs – a total skipper Richard Baggs felt was a bit on the low side.

Bradninch were 92 for four at half way in reply having just lost James Street for 11.

Although Ross Acton gave it a whack – his 57 came off the same number of balls – the Bradninch were too far behind the clock to catch up and closed on 226 for nine.

Defeat leaves Bradninch one place and one point ahead of Cornwood in the second relegation place.

The good news was that fellow strugglers Torquay obliged by losing to Sidmouth by 168 runs and are only three points ahead of Bradninch.

Bradninch go to Plymouth this Saturday and could do with a win to keep in front of Cornwood.

Exmouth went off smartly with Baggs and Sandy Allen putting on 73 in the first 14 overs.

Baggs went for 20 – caught behind off Will Squire – but Allen carried on to reach 48 with eight fours before Paul Nott (2-43) prised him out.

Benton and David Lye (28) put on 45 for the next wicket, then Dan Hardy struck twice to remove Lye and Andy Buzza as Exmouth slowed briefly to 147 for four.

A partnership of 57 between Benton and Anning for the fifth wicket was topped up by 35 more from Anning and former Bradinch skipper Gary Chappell (19) before the overs ran out.

Bradninch opener Jackson Thompson was on and our for 14 by the end of the second over, followed by Hardy (11) and Greg Maher (9) in a running total of 48 for three.

Skipper Tim Piper (35) showed some application and in stands of 44 with Street and 28 with Acton made inroads into the target.

The problem was Bradninch were well behind the clock as Chappell (1-33), Jamie Tapper (0-28) and Toby Ingham (2-32) applied the brake.

When Acton was out with six overs to go the target was 65 to win and that was always beyond reach.
