EXMOUTH skipper Richard Baggs took a conscious decision not to use Warwickshire’s left-arm spinner Chris Metters in the derby clash with Budleigh Salterton last time out.
Metters is still recovering from a shoulder injury and subsequent operation, which has kept him out of the Warwickshire 1st XI picture for the past two seasons.
Exmouth have retained Metters’ Devon League registration since he went to Edgbaston three years ago and offered him a rehab game against Budleigh.
With a gloomy forecast and little chance of the game reaching a conclusion, Baggs felt there was no point rushing Metters back.
“Chris said his shoulder wasn’t great and there was no point risking it in a game which was never going to finish,” said Baggs.
“He was going to bat instead, but as we didn’t get in he didn’t get ago.
“I was happy to rest him as a bowler as we have big games coming up – Sidmouth, Bovey and North Devon – and want him fit to bowl in those.”
Budleigh were 137 for six when it rained at the Maer – former Devon captain Bob Dawson (52) and Stuart Langridge (42) the only batters with scores in double figures.
Pick of the bowlers for Exmouth was Gary Chappell (3-17) with Trevor Anning (2-12) hard on his heels.
Exmouth go to Exeter this Saturday while Budleigh’s struggle to get out of the bottom two continues with a home game against fellow strugglers Cornwood.
Somerset 2nd XI and Devon batter James Burke was missing from the Budleigh side against Exmouth but skipper Joel Murphy hopes to have in back for the Corns.
Another potential selection option is early order batter Sam Richardson ,who has rejoined Budleigh after a stint out of the game since joining the Army. He had half a comeback game for the 2nd XI against South Devon last Saturday.
