Bess ton puts Devon back in game

SKIPPER Josh Bess stroked his way to a century to put Devon back in business against Herefordshire at Colwall.
Devon, 40 for four overnight in reply to Herefordshire’s sizeable first-innings total of 344 for seven, recovered to reach 302 all out with 4.4 of their 90 overs to come.
The recovery was led by Bess in his first game as captain with an undefeated 113, compiled in eight minutes short of four hours against 219 balls faced.
Bess would be the first to admit he didn’t do it alone as there was substantial help along the way from Sandy Allen, Rhys Davies, Trevor Anning and last man Mark Orchard.
Devon only added 12 runs overnight before losing Matt Golding to a catch round the corner for nine.
Allen strode to the wicket for the first time in two years for Devon and marked his return with a brisk 42 off 44 balls in a stand of 67 with the captain.
When Allen went caught behind to Brad Wadlan – one of seven wickets taken by the Herefordshire spinner – Davies came out and got on with it.
Davies scored a debut half century against Cornwall last month, another against Wales two weeks ago and made it three on the trot with 63 off 61 balls.
The stand between Bess and Davies had reached 98 when they were parted by Bradley bowling the latter.
Bess was still there, undefeated on 65 in a running total of 217 for seven having taken Devon safely past the follow-on target of 195.
Another valuable stand of 42 between Bess and Trevor Anning (24) took the score up to 259 for eight.
Anning went caught in the gully to Wadlan, who trapped Chris Bradley lbw two balls later.
Last man Mark Orchard is no mug with the bat though and he held out for nearly half an hour at the end for a dozen, allowing Bess to reach his century in an all-out total of 302.
Herefordshire were 42 runs ahead on first innings and by tea had moved to 27 for one to lead by 69.
The man out was left-hander Liam Gwynne, dispatched lbw by Bradley for eight.
