Lions chance for Horwell

DEVON have found a new wicketkeeper for tomorrow’s Lions’ XI friendly against Warwickshire at Wellesbourne after one of their players received a summons from Lord’s!

Batsman Rhys Davies, who has been playing Minor Counties Cricket for Devon this season, has been asked to play for MCC Young Cricketers against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Monday in a Second Eleven Trophy game.

Davies has made four appearances for Devon this season and scored at least 50 on each of them. Only skipper Josh Bess has made more runs this term.

“It is great news for Rhys, but means we have to find someone else to keep wicket,” said Lions’ director of cricket Tim Western.

“The Devon T20 finals at Exeter rule out quite a few players, but that’s not such a bad thing as it means an opportunity for someone else we might not have seen otherwise.”

Davies’ place in the side has gone to Cornwood keeper batter Mark Horwell.

Davies’ selection is a feather in the cap for all involved in Devon cricket from the age of 13 upwards when he started playing in the age-group teams. Over the past two seasons Davies has been gaining extra experience playing for Devon Lions against Academy and MCCU sides.

Somerset have shown a modest amount of interest in Davies, but nothing recently. It is his form for Devon which has got him noticed and potentially opened the door into a cricket career.

‘I was half on the academy at Somerset during the winter, but have heard nothing from them for a while,’ said Davies, who also keeps wicket.

‘Being asked to play against Leiciestershire didn’t come entirely out of the blue as I have been in contact with them for a while.

‘I imagine the game is being seen as some sort of trial for places next year, although nothing has been said.

‘Being part of MCC Young Cricketers would help me in my aim of becoming a professional cricketer.’
