PLYMOUTH defeated Torquay by five wickets in the only Premier Division game to reach a conclusion.
Torquay were all out for 176 in the 48th of their 50 overs – Dan Wightman coming in at number 10 top scoring on 176.
Opener Nick Watkin got in, got to 30 and got out caught at slip for 30, but no one else made more than Ben Passenger (15) until Wightman came in.
Having been given a thorough going over by Dave Burke (2-36), Rob Bennett (1-19), Matt Hooper (3-24) and John Kerridge (2-32), Torquay were 116 for nine when Passenger got out.
Last pair Wigthman and Neil Osborne (27) bravely put on 60 for the final wicket,Pass which at least gave Torquay’s bowlers something to defend.
Passenger made an early breakthrough when he had Callum Whittaker caught at point, then James Toms (23) was pouched on the boundary by Mickey Wilkinson having a go at the same bowler.
A stand of 64 between Maruns Labuschagne (62) and George Stephenson (23) got Plymouth up to 113 for two – then three wickets fell for 12 runs and briefly it was game on.
Wightman bowled Stephenson and Labuschagne one after the other, then completed the run-out dismissal of Ben Stein.
Another wicket then might have made it interesting, but it didn’t come.
The two Bennetts – Rob (18no) and the unrelated Henry (35) – saw Plymouth over the line with more than 11 overs to spare.
Plymouth needed a win after a couple of defeats and skipper Hooper was pleased by the workmanlike nature of this one.
Said Hooper: “The pitch was very green and did all sorts early on and it also spun - a lot!
“Torquay did well to get to 115 for nine to be honest and their last pair were brilliant.
“We got a little ragged with the last pair which was disappointing, but the two lads batted well.
Sam Stein bowled brilliantly - his best spell of the year and - Burkey and Rob Bennett had overs where they were unplayable.
It was great to see John Kerridge get his first wickets as well. He is going to be terrorising Devon League cricketers for a long time to come and I would be surprised if Devon aren't watching him very soon.”
With rain in the air and the threat of a wash out, Plymouth had to be positive when they batted.
Hooper said it was a close-run thing for a while, but finished comfortably for Plymouth.
“At the 20-over stage it was in the balance, but we seemed to be a boundary an over ahead of the rate,” said Hooper.
“Marnus batted brilliantly. He was desperate for runs as he hasn't got the scores he has wanted recently.
“When Marnus got out we still needed 50 but luckily the Bennetts finished it off.
“Rob Bennett batted sensibly and ran between the wickets well. He is turning himself into the all-rounder we all know he is. He just needs to keep applying himself.
“Henry was just brutal, picking the balls he wanted to smash out the park. He is another exciting prospect and I think his hard work is paying off.”
