TAVISTOCK’S promotion drive in the B Division stumbled again when they went down by seven wickets to Ivybridge.
Tavvy are still top of the table on 202 points, but what was a 30 point lead four games ago has been trimmed down to six by three defeats.
Bideford (197pts), Thorverton (195) and now Ivybridge (194)
pose the biggest threats to Tavvy (206), but Plymstock (174) remain in the picture.
Tavvy were put in on a drying wicket and reached 158 for nine in the full 45 overs.
Pete Abraham (3-20) and Harry Solomon (3-22) had Tavvy ailing at 37 for four – of which Ian Gray had made 24.
Dave Manning’s 22 hinted at a revival, but when he and Marc Webber (25) went close together Tavvy were 86 for six with nearly 16 overs to go.
Aaron Churchill (44) and Thoko Peter (21) added 64 for the seventh wicket before both were picked off by Jeewan de Silva (3-27).
Ivybridge opened up with veterans Andy Johnson and Derek Solomon, who have a combined age of 102.
Solomon went at 33, and Johnson for 40 at 88 as Ivybridge made a confident start.
The only other casualty on the way to victory was Ramesh Perera (24) with six needed to win.
Sri Lankan De Silva (38no) saw Ivybridge over the line.
Shaun Daymond, the Tavistock captain, said losing the toss was crucial to the outcome of the match.
“The wicket was very wet to start and they bowled good lines on a sticky surface,” said Daymond.
“Our score was a good one for the conditions, but we bowled poorly with two many extras on a wicket that dried out.
“Losing this one is going to make for a tough run in.”
Ivybridge skipper Gareth Andrews, who watched from the sidelines due to a back injury, said the result had blown the promotion race ‘wide open again’
He added: “It was probably our best, all-round performance of the season.
“Pete Abraham and Harry Solomon bowled well and George Thompson’s keeping was excellent again, with four stumpings and three catches.”
