Premier 2nd XI: Plymouth odds on for title

PREMIER 2nd XI

EXETER slipped further behind Plymouth in the quest for the Premier 2nd XI title when they could only draw with bottom side Hatherleigh.

Richard Nelsey (67no) and Tshepo Legodi (82) were Exeter’s big run scorers in a useful total of 230 for six.

Having been 87 for five Exeter were glad of a stand of 134 between Nelsey and Legodi for the sixth wicket.

Mark Brock (2-46) and Ross Cherrington (2-48) picked up wickets for Hatherleigh while the going was good.

Hatherleigh lost momentum when they slipped from 42 for none to 64 for four and pretty well gave up the chase then. Jack Richardson (3-56) did the damage.

Cherrington hit 66 not out to see Hatherleigh to a draw at 182 for five.

Exeter trail Plymouth by 34 points and have it all to do to catch up.

PLYMOUTH eased to a five-wicket win over Plympton to tighten their grip on top spot.

Jamie Pfeiffer (43no) top scored for Plympton and there were chip-ins of 30 each from Matt Gregory and Ross Farrer.

Harry Barnes (3-40) took the bowling honours for Plymouth.

Pas Mawalagi hit 40 as Plymouth set off in hot pursuit. Ben Stein (28), Harry Stephenson (24) and Harry Kandampullly (24) kept the score moving then Keith Barlow clubbed 50 not out to clinch victory.

BOVEY Tracey went down by 44 runs in a low-scoring affair against North Devon at Instow.

Arren deYoung (4-27) and James Mason (3-37) reduced North Devon to 82 for nine and the home side were glad of 21 from tail-ender Sam Witheridge (21) for getting them to 106 all out.

Bovey were duffed up from the start by Richard Kelly and Paul Heard, who had them reeling at 11 for five.

Ollie Thomas (23) stopped the rot for a while, but not long as Kelly (5-16) heard (3-21) and Tim Cook (2-4) shot Bovey out for 62.

SIDMOUTH became the latest side to feel the force of Cornwood’s revival when the two sides met at Oak Park.

Cornwood, who went 11 games without a win, have now won three on the trot and moved off the bottom of the table thanks to a 22-run win over Sidmouth.

A home win looked unlikely after Alistair Chilcott (5-33), Mark Jasper (3-49) and Gary Chaplin (2-25) had bowled Cornwood out for 119.

It didn’t start well for Cornwood as opener Duncan Boase was dismissed first ball by Jasper – and Luke Richardson went in the next over.

Sidmouth seemed on course at 66 for three – Matt Hewer making 17 –but lost the game in the time it took to slip to 72 for six.

Henry Bennett snatched six wickets for 29 runs and Eliot Staddon had three for 14 as Sidmouth were bowled out for 97.

BUDLEIGH Salterton held out for a draw against Paignton after losing their way on the chase.

Andy Kingdon hit 75 with 11 fours and two sixes to take Paignton to 152 for four.

Ollie Higgs (31), Mark Griffiths (27) and Terry Farkins all chipped in to the final total of 251 for eight.

Wickets were pricey with Ian Taylor (2-26) and James Leat (2-50) offering the best value.

Neil Murrin (50) and Harry Parkin (22) got Budleigh off to a 40-run start with Murrin carrying on to 118 for three.

Wickets tumbled after that to Farkins (4-40) and Chris Smith (3-31) and at 168 for seven when Leat got out it was time to call it a day.

Taylor finished unbeaten on 55 in a total of 210 fior nine, batting out the last three overs with Joe Marley to earn the draw and 11 more points towards survival.

Budleigh are three points clear of the drop zone with Paignton a point above them.
