Sidmouth after revenge against Paignton

SIDMOUTH can do themselves a favour and Exeter some good at the same time by winning at home to Paignton.

Exeter will welcome any misfortunes befalling Paignton, who are on their tails down in the basement.

And second-placed Sidmouth need points to stop the gap between then and leaders Torquay widening beyond the current 12 points.

Sidmouth have every reason to be wary of Paignton having lost to them at home earlier in the season.

Paignton at Queens Park are a tough proposition and Sidmouth skipper Will Murray will treat them with respect.

“Paignton seem to have some fine young players, Higgs and Wolf have both done well with the bat this year, and it is important we stay focused against them,” said Murray.

“We have had a couple of good results against Bovey and Exmouth and are right up behind Torquay now.

“We know Paignton can be dangerous – losing to them the first time wasn’t part of our plan – and I expect it will be tough down there.”

Something else that will be tough is deciding who to leave out to get Matt Cooke and keeper-batter Peter Randerson in the side.

Matt Hewer (pictured) and Dan Powell, who stepped up from the 2nd XI last week, both played match-winning innings for Sidmouth.

Murray may be tempted to give Harvey Sargent a game in the 2nd XI to freshen-up his batting after a run of humdrum scores.

For Sidmouth’s Kiwi paceman Andrew Mathieson the game will be a chance to visit his father’s old stamping ground

Dad Dave – also a lively seam bowler – played for Paignton in the last 1970s while touring Europe in a camper van.

“We remember Dave well,” said Paignton player and committeeman Tim Ward. “He was our first overseas player.”
