Abbot end long wait to in Brockman Cup

ABBOTSKERSWELL 2nd XI carried off the Brockman Cup for the first time in a generation by beating Paignton 3rd XI in the final at Torquay.

Charlie Hill (48) top scored for Abbots in their total of 136-7 – Dan Wolf taking four of their wickets for 21 runs.

Paignton must have fancied their chances chasing less than seven an over, but struggled from the start to keep up with the rate and lacked a big scorer to anchor the chase.

Five overs out Paignton were 71 for seven and the lower order folded as they were bowled out for 92 – Jonny Joseph, Connor Adams and Owen Penrice all taking three wickets each.

Having lost in last season’s final to Dartington & Totnes, victory was sweet for Abbots. They last lifted South Devon’ s oldest cricket trophy way back in 1985.

Abbots raced along to 58 for one in the first six overs – Charlie Hill (49) and Penrice (35) leading the charge - then hit the ball in the duck pond and the run-rate slowed.

“We had been batting against a hard, new ball which went when you hit it, but got a soft one back and scoring runs became more difficult,” said Abbots’ skipper Charlie Mitchell, pictured receiving the cup from Angela Glendenning on behalf of the Brockman family.

Hill and Penrice took the score to 84 then went one after the other to Tom Blundell and Sam Woodcock.

Runs kept coming from Adams, whose brisk 27 off 17 balls upped the tempo in the final five overs.

Elliot Adams, Joseph and Matt Beasant did a good job limiting Paignton to 25 for two in the first six overs.

Any early casualty was dangerman Dan Wolf, who snicked off to Joseph and gave Mitchell the catch.

“Getting Wolf out early was crucial as had he got going no total was safe,” said Mitchell.

“Seeing him go off for six was when I though it might be our night.”

Liam Talbot was in and out for 19 and next best in a running total of 49 for six after 12 overs was Toby Meadlock (16).

Chris Slough slapped a brisk 18 after coming in at 67 for seven, but the game was up by then and both sides knew it.

Connor Adams took the man of the match award for his all-round contribution of 27 with the bat and three for 16 from four overs with the ball.

Abbotskerswell 136-7 (C Hill 48, O Penrice 35, C Adams 27; D Wolf 4-21), Paignton 92 (L Talbot 19, C Slough 18; C Adams 3-16, O Penrice 3-27, J Joseph 3-21). Abbot bt Paignton by 44 runs.
