EXETER hoisted themselves out of the Premier Division bottom two with a nine-wicket win at Exmouth.
Exmouth’s problems started in the second over when debutant Dan Pyle got out, and escalated as Sandy Allen, David Lye and Bob Dawson all went in quick succession.
When Dawson was fourth out on 19, he had scored 12 of them.
The damage was done by the new-ball combination of George Greenway (2-28) – always keen to do well against his former Exmouth team-mates – and England U19 rising star Ben Green.
Dom Bess and Andy Mead chipped way at the middle order as Exmouth subsided 58 for eight. Green had four for 19.
Finlay Marks (16) and Alvin Pollard (27) hung around for more than an hour adding 48 for the ninth wicket.
Exeter skipper Lenygon deployed himself as the partnership breaker and picked off both in the space of five balls to finish with two for 15 as Exmouth were all out for 103.
Exeter didn’t hang around longer than necessary to polish off the target.
Opener Zak Bess was their only casualty – out for 13 with the score on 40.
Rob Holman (56no) and Lorenzo Machado (30no) had the rest knocked off inside 30 overs.
Plymouth went behind Exeter into the bottom two after they lost to Torquay by seven wickets.
Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon said he hoped the win over Exmouth was a corner turned in terms of performance and team stability.
“It was nice to a lot of the guys back together and put on a performance,” he said.
“It was the perfect start to the second half and that's the standard we must keep to from now.”
Richard Baggs, the Exmouth captain, said there could be no excuses for the manner and size of the defeat.
“We batted like drains – again,” said Baggs.
“There was poor shot selection from most of us. Our batting is really letting the team down.
“We were totally outplayed. If Exeter had that side every week they would be up there with the top teams.”
