Records tumble to Pens batters

DAVID Harris and Jack Lewis both made centuries in Ipplepen’s record-busting 212-run win over Braunton.

Harris smacked a career-best 141 not out from just 131 balls faced. He got to 100 in 99 balls, helped by belting 15 fours and three sixes.

Lewis made exactly a hundred in a stand of 227 for the first wicket – and Ipplepen weren’t finished then.

Tom Dyer made 41 off 16 balls and Joe Abbott made 28 not out from 16 deliveries as the total motored on to 337 for four.

It was Ipplepen’s best Devon League score, passing the 317 for three at Exeter St James in 1995, and the highest 1st XI opening stand.

Harris' 141 was also the highest individual 1st XI innings, replacing 128 scored by Andy Tuckett (1995 v Exeter St James) and Jeff Heath in the late 1990s.

“I believe it is also the first instance of two centuries in the same Devon League innings for the club, although Alan Boon and Paul Farley achieved the feat at Manaton in the late 1980s in a South Devon League match,” said proud skipper Keith Wakeham.

Braunton were all out for 125 – a disappointing total not helped by losing three wickets –the fourth, fifth and sixth – on 97.

Alfie Huxtable opened up with 49 and there wasn’t much from the rest.

Star bowler with six for 37 was Aussie Nick Fairbank. Steve Bowden took three for 32 by using the full toss to good effect!

“The final record broken was Ipplepen’s widest winning margin, which will take some beating,” said Wakeham.

Ipplepen face promotion hunters Shobrooke Park this Saturday in a top-of-the-table clash.
