Plymstock step-up promotion challenge

PLYMSTOCK stepped up their promotion challenge by walloping Abbotskerswell by 126 runs.

It seems to be all change on a weekly basis at the top of the B Division where one no one seems to be stringing wins together.

Abbotskerswell were second going into the latest round, now they are fifth. Plymstock are up to fourth, but the gap between them and leaders Shobrooke is only seven points.

Plymstock opener Dom Wood showed the Abbots bowling little respect as he clubbed 116 off 114 balls with 15 fours and three sixes.

Wood put on 135 for the first wicket with Jason Williams (58) and was still going strong at 247 for five when he was finally dismissed.

Highlights included a brutal battering of Abbots’ opening bowler Phil Lacey, who went for 27 in a nine-ball first over and didn’t see a second.

Matt McKay (20) and Dave Orchard (22) featured in stands of 37 and 60 respectively with Wood in Plymstock’s total of 270 for nine.

Teenage bowler Jonny Joseph took five for 50 on his 1st XI debut for Abbots, who used eight bowlers trying to slow Plymstock down.

Abbots were all out for 144 in rely – which is more than they looked like making at 63 for seven after a duffing up from Syed Ali (4-44) and Ian Whalley (2-30).

Dylan Nel made 25 and Charlie Hill 15, but no one else reached double figures in the first seven departures.

Hugo Whitlock (32) Matt Beasant (20) put on 54 for the eighth wicket and last-man Lacey got 25 before Orchard (2-38) polished off the tail.
