CLYST Hydon ran out of steam on the chase at Feniton, where they dipped to a 71-run defeat.
Feniton were glad of a stand of 137 in the final 14 overs between Sean Devine and Alex Franpitt for reaching 279 for four.
Devine made a steady 87 not out while Frankpitt belted 91 not out off just 48 balls.
Dhanuja Haturusingha (2-49) had Hydon’s best bowling return.
Hydon lacked a big partnership to move the chase forward with Chris Holmes (55) and Clinton Lewis (30) their main run getters.
From 141 for five Hydon subsided to 208 all out with Matt Davies (3-36) leading the way, backed up by father and son Jon Pyle (2-22) and Fran Pyle (2-48).
Hydon take on lowly Filleigh this Saturday.
FILLEIGH remain stuck fast at the foot of the C Division West after losing by 78 runs to promotion-chasers Alphington.
Mark Porter slammed a century and Paul James 49 as the Alphas made 240 for six. There were two wickets each for John Hickman and Kieran Jerrett.
Filleigh were all out for 162 in reply – Ryan Bowden top scoring on 53. Ben Newcombe took three for 57 and there were two wickets apiece for James and Tom Bath.
Filleigh go to Clyst Hydon this Saturday with some ground to make up to get out of the basement.
They trail Kentisbeare by three points, but the real challenge is overhauling third-bottom Feniton who are 26 points in front.
BARNSTAPLE& Pilton came off second best against leaders Ottery St Mary, who cruised to a 64-run win at Taw Meadow.
Billy Reed top scored for Ottery with 50 and was well supported by Rob Crabb (35), Ed Fowler (22) and Matt Reed (35no).
Ottery were steady rather than spectacular with Matt Reed and Fowler’s stand of 60 for the third wicket their best partnership.
Barnstaple & Pilton will feel they could have done better than they did after reaching 83 for one at half way.
Tom Popham (39) and Brady Saunders made early runs, then skipper Steve Moore (27) and son Jack (44) notched 64 for the fourth wicket.
There was no real support after that though as B&P pottered to 206 for six.
Barnstaple & Pilton go to Feniton this Saturday.
SHALDON face a big ask this Saturday when they visit runaway leaders Ottery St Mary – picking themselves up after a 103-run defeat at Seaton.
Seaton made 243 for seven in 45 overs, built around a stand of 101 between Joel Seward (37) and Nick Beedell (57). Ben Morgan (32) and Mike Wheeler (30no) chipped in.
Shaldon were in early trouble at 26 for three, recovered to 91 with Will Moore (31) going well, then lost three wickets without scoring a run.
Jamie Day made 22 not out at the other end from the one where Shaldon were subsiding to 140 all out.
Mogan and Rob Prior took three wickets each.
