Sandford captain disappointed by manner of defeat

SANDFORD remain in the bottom half of the table after going down by seven wickets to visiting Hatherleigh.

Prince Masvuare and Josh Cann both made half-centuries as Sandford made 208 for nine in 50 overs.

Danny Forrester with 76 not out and Simon Gillespie (81) made light work of the chase.

Hatherleigh move two places up the table to fifth while Sandford drop behind them to sixth. They are only 20 points clear of the bottom two with lowly Lewdown to play this Saturday.

“It was a fairly disappointing result after our last couple of performances,” said Sandford skipper Jamie Palmer.

“Hatherleigh out performed us in all departments on the day.

“They showed good discipline with the ball and good intent with the bat.

“We weren't terrible but just need that extra edge and desire. I'm looking for a lot more against Lewdown.

Masvuare (58) and Adrian Small (15) put on 46 as Sandford recovered from 23 for two.

Newcomer Cann, recently arrived from Honiton, was Masvuare’s running mate in a stand of 57 for the fourth wicket.

Mark Lake (2-41) removed Masvuare and Ashley Baker in quick succession, but Cann carried on to make 54.  He was eighth man out on 179.

“I thought Josh Cann batted superbly, showing good maturity in scoring a fine 50,” said skipper Palmer.

Steve Letheren returned for a second five-over spell to take two more wickets for a three-for-26 haul.

Hatherleigh had a minor wobble at the start – Gareth Tidball and Chris Jelly out for 33 on the board – but that was as good as it got.

Forrester and Gillespie hoisted 149 for the third wicket and by the time Jamie Palmer (2-39) sent back Gillespie it was as good as won.

Carl Schwarz (20no) was there at the end with Forrester when the game was won with more than 11 overs to spare.
