DIVAN Marais hit a season’s best 140 not out in two parts to set Chagford on course for a 111-run win over Ashburton.
Paul Penberthy missed out – he took six overs to get out for none – but after that there was little respite for the Ashburton bowlers.
Opener James Fulner hit 60, which came off 80 balls and included nine fours, and was involve in a sand of 131 for the second wicket with South African Marais.
Ben Hancock chipped in with 20 and Will Lammonby 23 as the score mounted.
Marais had to go off for treatment at one stage after top-edging a delivery from Matt Churchill into his face.
Will Coon with two for 38 was the only Ashes bowler to take more than one wicket.
Marcus West (1-40) was the only Ashes bowler to go for less than five runs an over.
Ashburton had trouble stringing any sort of stand together as they plunged to 99 for eight.
James Dart was eighth out for a score of 34 – which was the best any Ashes batsman got.
Gordon Colwill (13), West (29) and Steve Hulse (10no) put on 62 for the last two wickets as Ashes reached a respectable 160 all out.
Chagford shared the wickets around with Neil Rowlands (3-38) having the edge over Jon Wright and Craig Penberthy, who had two each.
Chagford are at home Stoke Gabriel this Saturday. Ashburton meet Plymouth CS&R.
STOKE Gabriel suffered an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat by Kingsbridge in the first game to finish anywhere in the Devon League last Saturday.
Stoke lost a wicket first ball, stumbled to 40 for nine and were all out for 59. Extras (17) totalled more than any batter.
James Rosewarne took four for 21 and there were two wickets each for Rickie Carr and Neil Peach.
James Westlake (22no) and James Ford (23o) needed just 6.4 overs to wipe off the target.
Kingsbridge are now out of the bottom two for the first time this season. Stoke drop into it, 13 points adrift of safety.
Kingsbridge take on Bridestowe this Saturday looking for a fourth straight win.
Dartington & Totnes have got clear water at the top of the C Division West after they beat Whitchurch by 30 runs and former leaders Bridestowe lost again.
Bridestowe were only a point behind going into the match, but their one-wicket defeat by Yelverton drops them 13 points down the table.
Chris Cook (79) and Kalon Veale (68) put on 139 as D&T accumulated 219 all out. Harold Stevenson marked his 1st XI recall with 25 at the end.
Charlie Barriball and James Towl had three wickets each for Whitchurch.
Keeping up with the run rate wasn’t an issue for Whitchurch, but keeping wickets in hand was.
When veteran Nigel Barriball (31) was ninth out at 169, that was Whitchurch just about done. They were all out for 189.
Cook – Clyst St George’s loss is definitely D&T’s gain – capped a fine game with three wickets for 16 runs. Will Gornall and Harry Baxendale had two each.
BABBACOMBE’S promotion prospects suffered a setback when they lost by 26 runs to Plymouth CS&R.
The Gaylard brothers, Rob and Brian, dominated the scoring for Civil, hitting 91 not out and 47 respectively in a tally of 228 for five.
Seb Powell had three for 47.
Babbacombe were all out for 202 in reply – Matt Inch top scoring on 65. Cameron Fryer (38) and Powell (28) chipped in.
Defeat drops Babbacombe down to fourth in the table. The Walls Hill outfit visit Dartington this Saturday aiming to do something about the 23-point gap between first and fourth.
Civil, who have now won three on the trot, are up to third in the latest table - a point ahead of Babbacombe.
Yelverton came out just on top in a thrilling moorland derby against Bridestowe.
Bridestowe batted first and got a decent total of 178ao thanks to Gary Sizmur (41) and Nazir Khan (43).
There were also contributions from Tom and Mark Fogerty and James Ewen but the middle order were spun out by Van Niekerk (4-28) and Richard Goldsby-West (4-33).
The Yelverton chase got off to a slow start but was able to accelerate when Brain (76) got going.
The chase seemed to be well on course until Van Niekerk skied one from Sizmur (3-37) and Brain fell lbw to Khan (2-42).
A couple of run outs and some tight bowling brought Bridestowe back in to the game, leaving 9 runs required from the last 3 overs.
Butler struck with his first ball and a tight over from Khan left 4 needed from the last, with two wickets left.
Four dots and a single meant three runs were needed from the last ball, which missed everything and went down to short third man for a bye.
Bridestowe thought they had won it, but to their dismay, and Yelverton's jubilation, the umpire signalled wide meaning that the scores were tied.
Yelverton scrambled a single from the last ball to grab the victory by the finest of margins.
