EVERY game is a cup final from now on for Budleigh Salterton, who cross swords with Cornwood at Ottermouth.
Budleigh’s eight-wicket defeat at Bradninch – for whom Ross Acton starred with bat and ball – dropped Budleigh down to third in the table.
Brixham lead the field on 170 points with Cornwood a point behind second and Budleigh 12 points back in third.
Promotion is the object of the exercise for Budleigh this season and that hasn’t changed despite the departure of skipper Lloyd White.
Joel Murphy, who has resumed as captain, said a hiatus was understandable after the upheaval of losing White. But the players have to look ahead not back if they want to go up.
“I was disappointed to lose – I always am – but not too disappointed by the way we played,” said Murphy.
“Sometimes you have to say you have been outplayed and the game at Bradninch was one of those times.
“We can’t dwell on it: we need to win every game now, get as close as we can to the top two and see what happens when they play each other on the last day. That could be interesting…”
Murphy, who captained Bradninch before rejoining Budleigh in 2010, said Acton showed what a good cricketer he his with a game he will never forget.
“A hat-trick and an unbeaten hat-trick in the same match – you will cherish that,” said Murphy.
“Ross has always been a fine bowler and if you asked him he would probably say he was a bowler first and a batsman second.
“Clearly he has improved as a batsman as it was a superb innings. Charlie Walker got a good hundred too. As I said, we were outplayed. One of our players jokingly said afterwards we were about 300 short. That’s a bit exaggerated, but you felt whatever we got Bradninch would have got one more.”
Bradninch are away to Tavistock this Saturday.
Tavvy dropped into the bottom two by losing at Brixham last Saturday and need to pick themselves up in a hurry.
Shaun Daymond, the Tavistock captain, accepts that Bradninch will be tough opposition to turn things round against.
Bradninch are starting to prove the quality of their squad and will be a really tough game,” said Daymond.
“We're just looking to build off the recent performances.
“We haven't been winning games, but are improving in certain areas.
“If we make the extra 10 per cent we will pick up a few wins.
James McGahey, Dom Scaglioni and Josh Stephens all come in to the side.
