SOUTH Devon Cricket Club went viral on the Internet last month when West Indies star Chris Gayle turned up to play in Peter Trego’s benefit match.
Gayle – the hottest property in world cricket at the time after his record-breaking antics at the World Cup for Somerset in the NatWest T20 competition – emerged from the crowd watching the game with bat in hand to have a go at the bowling.
The subsequent publicity through the Internet - we were the first to break the story at www.devoncricket.com – television, radio and especially social media really put South Devon CC and Newton Abbot on the cricketing map.
Gayle is now back in the West Indies having fulfilled his short-term contract with Somerset.
Trego’s benefit year is still going strong - and he is coming back to Newton Abbot to meet up with his new friends at South Devon over a curry.
The Eastern Eye restaurant in Queen Street has been booked for October 7 for another benefit year fund-raising event.
There will be a three-course curry meal, a sports quiz and a question-and-answer session with Trego (pictured) and some of his Somerset team-mates.
A raffle will be run on the night in aid of the Children's Hospice South West.
Bookings are being taken already at £60 each for a table of four – that’s an affordable £15 each for a curry good night out.
