EXMOUTH batsman Dan Pyle chiselled himself a permanent place in Devon Youth history by belting a double hundred and more against Hampshire U17s.
Pyle, who joined Exmouth last month having learned the game at Shobrooke Park, made 241 for Devon in their total of 451 for seven declared at Totton.
Exeter’s Tom Lammonby made 56 – he and Pyle put on 192- and Sandford’s Charles Fitzroy wasn’t far behind either on 47.
But it was Pyle’s day as he hit 30 fours and 10 sixes among 224 balls faced in four hours and 18 minutes at the crease on his way to a Devon Youth best score.
The previous best in any Devon age-group side was the 201 scored by Sidmouth’s Matt Cooke In 2005 against Exmouth at Cornwall.
Pyle (pictured) has made more than 500 runs for Devon this season so far and is averaging 101.
Pyle said he had no idea his was a record-breaking innings at the time. All he was interested in was batting for the team.
“When I was told later it was hard to believe – and it is still sinking in now,” said the Blundell’s School student.
“I didn’t really think about making a double hundred until I got past 150. Only then did I think it might be on- and having got that far I thought I would have a go for it.”
Sandy Allen, the Devon wicketkeeper –batsman who coaches the side, said it was ‘an outstanding innings’ by a cricketer with huge potential.
“It was almost surreal watching Dan bat as you didn’t realise just how many he was clocking up,” said Allen.
“He just went about his business accumulating runs and around 150 I thought he could be on for a big one.
“It was an unbelievable innings – the shame was that he got out.
“Dan was caught at long-on in the last over before we declared, hitting out for the team instead of protecting his average!
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Keith Donohue starts showing an interest in him with Minor Counties in mind.”
