Exmouth pay for missed opportunities

NEW Exmouth skipper Gary Chappell claimed his side allowed the chance to beat Sidmouth slip through their fingers after having them well and truly under the cosh.

Chappell hit a top score of 54, and Bob Dawson made 37, as Exmouth reached 200 all out in the 48th of their 50 overs.

Sidmouth were 50 for five in reply when Will Sobczak was dismissed and 134 for seven after Dan Powell and Anthony Griffiths were parted.

Exmouth couldn’t get the next breakthrough and Matt Hewer and Will Muray put on 67 unbroken to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

“We blew it,” said Chappell. “We Had them on the ropes twice, but couldn't kill the game off.

“We bowled well at times, but not consistently enough.

“And our fielding wasn't up to the standard.

“I am not going to criticise our bowlers though as we have bowled well all season and that's the first time a team has got 200 against us.”

Chappell added that Sidmouth have champions five times in the last seven seasons for a reason.

“Sidmouth showed their strength in depth and why they've been the most successful team over the last five seasons.

“They have a winning mentality and find a way to win games when up against it.”

Chappell and Sandy Allen (25) gave Exmouth an 86-run start then Dan Pyle (21) and Dawson (37) took the score along.

Dawson batted time, putting on 70 with four different partners.

Jake Fawcett (4-35) was the pick of the Sidmouth bowlers.

Trevor Anning (2-31) posed early issues for Sidmouth and the lid was kept on by Chappell and Alvin Pollard in the running total of 50 for five.

Griffiths (32) and Powell (43) put on 72, then perished successively to David Lye (2-34).

Hewer, on his 1st XI recall, dug in for 39 and Murray made 22 not out as Sidmouth sidled over the line in a tense finish with four balls to spare.
