THORVERTON carry on up the table after an unlikely 38-run win at Ivybridge.
The Bridge were going for their third straight win – and must have fancied their chances after skittling Thorverton for 114.
Ivybridge collapsed to nine for four in the tenth over, were 15 for six not long after and only avoided total humiliation thanks to a stand of 47 for the sixth wicket between Kelvin Trent and Adam Huxtable.
Once Trent went at 62 for seven it was downhill all the way to 76 all out.
Having been in the bottom two for the first two months of the season, things are looking up all-round for Thorverton.
Skipper Graham White said: “We've moved up to fifth in the table and have two big games next against top two Plymstock and Ipplepen.”
White felt the win at Ivybridge was deserved despite the odd scores.
“We struggled to post a score on a difficult pitch and credit to Ivybridge who bowled very tightly,” said White.
“A score of 175 may have been par, so 114 was far short.
“Kobi Griggs and Gillam Crouch bowled beautifully with the new ball to reduce Ivybridge to 16 for six.
“There should only have been one result from there and tight spells from Jake Choules and James Hope helped, before Kobi came back to take the final two wickets.”
Gareth Andrews, the Ivybridge captain, said there were no excuses he could offer.
“It was just one of those days when Thorverton bowled really well and held some really good catches – and we didn't do a whole lot wrong,” said Andrews.
“Our bowlers were excellent as well, definitely our best bowling display of the season.
“If Thorverton bowl like that for rest of season, they'll be right in the mix.”
Thorverton were 87 for one when Griggs was dismissed by Jeewan de Silva for 46.
Opener George Greed and Griggs had shared a stand of 79 for the second wicket after Paul Fielder went cheaply.
Spinners de Silva (4-19) and Abraham Kopparambil (4-21) then got stuck into the middle order.
Greed’s demise – bowled de Silva – was the first of seven wickets to go for 13 runs as Thorverton fell apart.
Ivybridge won’t want to dwell long on their collapse, engineered by Griggs (5-11) and Crouch (3-15),
Choules (2-19) got in on the act too before Griggs returned to knock over tail-enders Paul Veale and Jamie Bullock in consecutive balls to complete his five-wicket haul.
