Heathcoat need to be more ruthless against leaders

HEATHCOAT need to be a bit more ruthless in the field when they visit leaders Torquay.

That’s the view of vice-captain Toby Lochead going into the game as Heathcoat aim to make it three in a row.

Heathcoat beat former leaders North Devon two weeks ago and followed up by defeating bottom side Plympton last time out.

Lochead said it was good to be in form ahead of the trip to Torquay, but what was good enough to beat Plympton may not be good enough against the current front runners.

“We made it harder than it needed to be against Plympton by not finishing them off when we had the chance,” said Lochead.

“Plympton were 122 for eight and we should have got them all out for not much more,

“Instead we ended up chasing 176 as we were not ruthless enough in the field.

“We need to make sure we take those last few wickets and hold those catches to take the pressure of our batsmen when we chase.”

Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon may be tipping Torquay for the title, but captain Justin Yau is following a trusted mantra at this stage of the season.

“We will keep going one game at a time - we are really enjoying our cricket and it's reflecting in our performances,” said Yau.

“There is such a long way to go and we will not get ahead of ourselves- just to be competing with the best is a fantastic achievement with this young core of players.”

Yau said you make a huge mistake by underestimating any side in the top flight.

“Heathcoat are a very good side – as displayed with their recent performances,” said Yau.

“The beauty of this division is anyone can beat each other on their day and we will do what we can to ensure we pick up a positive result on Saturday.”

Opening batsman Jack Richardson has finished with Torquay for the season now as he heads to Leeds on an internship with Goldman Sachs.

“He has been brilliant and will be missed both on and off the field,” said Yau.

“Oli Pitts who has been in prolific form for the 2nd XI will get a go at the top of the order and deserves his chance.”
