HOLDERS Ipplepen are on the way back to the Corinthian Cup final for the second year running – for a rematch with Uplyme & Lyme Regis.
The Pens routed Uplyme by 82 runs in last season’s final at Plymstock – Caleb Gaylard and Paul Thomas bowling them to victory.
Pens beat Plymstock by five runs in a Thursday night thriller to book their return ticket, while Uplyme were defeating visiting Alphington with three balls to spare.
Keith Wakeham, the Ipplepen captain, said: After last year Uplyme will be gunning for us.
“If the semi-finals are anything to go by, the final should be a close game.”
Dave Harris (44) and Tom Dyer (42) helped Pens reach 167 for nine in their 16 eight-ball overs. There were three wickets each for Ian Whalley and Dom Wood.
Wood (37) and Scott Mansfield (40) were the leading scorers as Plymstock got to the last over from Joe Abbot needing 24 to win.
Some lusty blows from Nick Lowe produced 16 off the first five balls – and eight to win off the last was unlikely without a no-ball or wide.
It was a close-run thing, which Wakeham said could have been closer
“A couple of the fours Lowe hit were only a few feet short of being sixes, which could have made it a different story,” said Wakeham.
Uplyme, who dispatched Upottery by 105 runs in the quarter-final, won by five wickets in a last-over finish against Alphington.
Mark Porter (21) and Alan Davey (32no) were the top scorers for Alphington in a tally of 134 for nine.
Skipper Mark Batey (53) led the Uplyme run chase.
The final takes place on Sunday, August 2 at Shaldon.
